Is the Summit program open to anyone?  Unfortunately no, you may participate only if you have had cancer.  It can be a current cancer diagnosis….or 25 years out.

Are the exercise specialists trained specifically to work with people who have cancer?  Yes, they have bachelor’s degrees in Exercise Science/Kinesiology, and are also certified as Cancer Exercise Specialists.

Can I safely exercise if I have lymphedema or neuropathy? Yes, you can.  Both issues would be discussed and addressed in your assessment.  No one has developed lymphedema in our program, and for participants with existing conditions, no one’s lymphedema has gotten worse.  Regarding neuropathy, in most cases, it seems to get better with time.

Are the twice weekly exercise classes mandatory? No, but they are highly recommended.

Are the exercise classes offered twice a week aerobic classes? No they are not.  Every participant has the same components in his/her individualized exercise regimen (cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility), but everyone’s regimen is based on the results of their assessment and their goals.  So each participant has a different regime to follow.  The class warms up and cools down together; the exercise time in between warm up and cool down is spent with each person doing their own exercise program, with the guidance of an exercise physiologist.

Are the exercise classes for Summit participants only? Yes.

What if I start and then have to stop in the middle of my program due to health reasons?
We can always put your program on hold for medical purposes.

Once I finish the 6 month program can I re-enroll?
Unfortunately, you cannot re-enroll with Summit unless you have had a reoccurrence.

Can I continue to come to Summit exercise classes once I complete the program?
Yes, you can always sign up with the recreation center that you completed your six month program at and continue with the classes for as long as you wish!  At each facility, there is a one time discounted fee within six months of completion of the program to join as a member of their facility.

How does Summit keep the cost of the program so low?
We are a nonprofit, so we offset the actual costs of the program with grants, fundraising events, and donation monies.  All of the recreation centers we work with give us great deals and opportunities at each of their facilities.  In return, we hope that as our participants complete the program, they sign up with that recreation center and make exercise a permanent way of life.
